Popular Music Video

Beyonce - Blow

Performance music video

Funk/Disco

this is a performance music video. "blow" is a disco influenced and funk song which has several other influences and elements.

voyeuristic treatment of the female body

Beyoncé is a major popstar, this means she is the face of her career and she would have to sell her imaage to appeal to her audience. She does this by doing the following:

  • Shots of her famous hour glass figure in a variety of seductive outfits.

  • Shots of her dancers in shorts and crop tops.

  • There are close up shots of her face but the main thing that stands out are her red lips: red usually smybolises lust.

  • Beyoncé and her dancers also include provcative choreography in the music video.

Some would say that these images degrade women, but I feel that Beyoncé's main aim is to empower women and to allow them to feel comfortabe when being provactive and not feel bad about it.

However, at one point we see a shot of a topless male dancer. This is done to appeal to the female audeince.

Relationship Between Music And Visual

At the start of the video we see the different shots of the rollers skating rink, roller blades, chopper bicycle and a Colourful "blow" sign. This shows the audience how 70s pop culture influenced her video. Throughout the music video we see a range of neon colours and this must have been incluenced by the 80s pop culutre.

choreography was done to match the rhythm of the song. Beyoncé adds sexual movements to not only appeal to tthe male audience but to women who want to be as confident as her and this in a away encourages them.

Relationship Between lyrics And Visual

kiss you when you lick your lips, I kiss you when you lick your lips

You like it wet and so do I, You like it wet and so do II know you never waste a drip, I know you never waste a drip I wonder how it feels sometimesMust be good to you

Keep me coming, keep me going, keep me coming, keep me going
Keep me humming, keep me moaning, keep me humming, keep me moaning
Don't stop loving 'til the morning, don't stop loving 'til the morning
Don't stop screaming, freaking, blowing,
Blow-o-o

The popular French expression Je ne sais quoi literally means I don’t know what.

The 2nd part is in Haitian Creole slang which translates to “Darling, I want you. Tonight it’s on!”

costume and make up

Beyoncé and the director (Hype Williams) decided to stick to the 80's theme.

Beyoncé and her dancers wear:

  • Neon leg warmers, leggings, crop tops and leotards.

  • Booty shorts

  • Roller skates

  • Big hair (near the end)

These were outfits and hairstyles that were popularin the 80's.

Beyoncé's make-up is quite bold in this video. This represents her her fearless character.
