Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory

1. thought through beat

First step is to take into account the structure of the song e.g verse chorus verse

Second important thing to notice is the voice of the artist. The arist will have a unique voice that can easily be indentified and this works well with thier star image.

Thirdly, Goodwin highlights the aritst mode of adress. the songs can be seen as story and the artist the storyteller.

2. narrative&performance

We only get to see the gist of a story in a music video and tend to interpret the main message of the artist. Goodwin believes that narrative and performance works well together because it allows the audience to watch the video multiple of times without loosing interest.

3. star image

Star image is an important part of music videos. Artist want to be unique in order to keep their audience interested in them. The star image never stays the same it developes over time with society and its trends.

4. relation of visuals to the song

ILLUSTRATE

AMPLIFICATION

  DISJUNCTURE

Music can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics. Illustration is the easiest concept to base around as it is just a literal meaning to the songs lyrics in visual form.

The coventions initially ignores the content of the song and genre of the music and tries to create a whole new meaning.

The music video may use both narrative and performance. meanings and effects are repeatedly shown throughout the video.

5. technical Aspects

The technical aspects are what keeps the music video together through camera work, angles, movement, editing, mise-en-scene, sound and special effects.

  • Lighting and colour helps set the mood and emphasis key moments of the video for a dramatic effect.

  •  Mise-en-scene (settings, props and costumes) is very important because the video needs to look authentic.

  • Music videos use cuts to go along with the beat or rhythm of the music.
